Raku Ceramics Masterclass

480.00

An annual opportunity to join Catherine Lucktaylor in her large rural studio nestled amidst the wild beauty of west Cornwall and discover the secrets to successful Raku fired ceramics.

These in-depth sessions are aimed at those with some experience of working with clay who want to enjoy the excitement and drama of the Raku firing process.

You will learn a variety of hand building and finishing techniques including burnishing and incising designs, wax/latex resist and masking. Application of glazes including white crackle, turquoise/copper, red crackle glazes, naked raku, horsehair & feather raku techniques. Participants also have the option to make 1 or 2 pieces to be smoke fired.

There will be plenty of fresh tea & coffee with cake and biscuits and a light lunch included.

The first 2 days will be spent hand building several pinched and coiled pieces, some of which will be burnished ready for the Raku firing days.

There will also be an option to add one or two pieces to a smoke firing.

Wednesday is a free day to explore the local area whilst I dry and bisque fire your creations. There are lots of lovely beaches and attractions nearby such as, Porthcurno and the Minack Theatre, Sennen Cove, Lands End, Boscawnoon Stone Circle, Sancreed Well and Carn Euny ancient village are some of my favourites!

Thursday 4th & Friday 5th July

These 2 days will be spent glazing and Raku firing your ceramics. Thursday is good opportunity to try a variety of techniques on smaller test pieces and we will also pack and light a sawdust firing, which will smoke overnight.

You will be able to use my full range of Raku glazes and try a variety of masking techniques, using tape, latex and was resists. Burnished pieces can be used for the Naked Raku technique and also for horsehair and feather Raku.

You will leave with a good range of Raku ceramics and a better understanding of what is possible.

Many previous students become hooked on the Raku process and go on to build their own Raku kilns, knowing they had the confidence to try it on their own.

Included with the course is a printed booklet which has details of the techniques we cover as well as a few glaze recipes to get you started. There is also a list of recommended suppliers and further reading as well has some notes on Health & Safety. Also included is a description how to build your own simple raku kiln.
